What is Business Liability Insurance?
Business liability insurance, also called general liability insurance, is designed to protect business owners and their businesses from financial losses due to third-party claims. These policies help cover the costs of lawsuits or claims arising from normal business operations, such as bodily injury and property damage that occurs on the business’ property or in connection with its operations. Business liability insurance may also cover damages caused by a product manufactured, distributed, or sold by the business, which is commonly referred to as product liability.
There are a number of policy options to help meet the specific needs of business owners, and business liability can be purchased as a standalone policy or in a bundle as part of a business owners policy (BOP).
Is Business Liability Insurance Required in Colorado?
Business liability insurance is not mandated by law in any state, including Colorado, but it is highly recommended. Some landlords or lenders require businesses to have liability insurance in order to reduce their risk of being sued in the case of an accident or damage on their property. Even if it is not mandated, business owners choose to purchase coverage to protect themselves against potentially devastating losses to the business that can result from third-party claims, such as those arising from bodily injury or property damage lawsuits. Business owners should review their leases, contracts, and permits to determine if there are any specific insurance requirements to comply with.
